Puerto Iguazu
Puerto Iguazú is situated in the northeast frontier of Argentinain in the province of Misiones. The city borders on Brazil and Paraguay.
With a population of 40000, it is the fifth largest city in the Province, after Posadas, Oberá, Eldorado and San Vicente.
The world-renowned Iguazu Falls are only 18 kilometres (11 mi) away from the city.
Iguazu Falls, are waterfalls of the Iguazu River located on the border of the Brazilian state of Paraná and the Argentine province of Misiones. The falls divide the river into the upper and lower Iguazu.
The waterfall system consists of 275 falls along 2.7 kilometers (1.67 miles) of the Iguazu River.
The semicircular waterfall at the heart of this site is some 80 m high and 2,700 m in diameter.
Made up of many cascades producing vast sprays of water, it is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the world.
The surrounding subtropical rainforest has over 2,000 species of vascular plants and is home to the typical wildlife of the region: tapirs, giant anteaters, howler monkeys, ocelots, jaguars and caymans.
The first European to find the falls was the Spanish Conquistador Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca in 1541, after whom one of the falls in the Argentine side is named.
The falls were rediscovered by Boselli at the end of the nineteenth century, and one of the Argentine falls is named after him.
Iguazu Falls was short-listed as a candidate to be one of the New Wonders of Nature by the New Seven Wonders of the World Foundation. As of February 2009 it was ranking fifth in Group F, the category for lake, rivers, and waterfalls.
